Changes & Re-shoots

There where many changes in the process of making our thriller and there was also quite a lot of re-shoots throughout the days of shooting. There could of been a big change in our thriller because on the second day of shooting there was people in the room we was filming the thriller in, but we managed to solve the problem in the end.

One change we made was the idea of the way we was going to use one of our props, the fake blood was originally going to be used on Louise's (the stalkers) hand to create an effective shot in the opening scene to scare the audience. The shot and the way we decided to do the shot wasn't effective at all and wasn't realistic, it just looked fake and stupid. We had to re-shoot the shot the next day of shooting, then thought of different ideas of using the fake blood to make it more effective on the audience and also so it looks more realistic. We all come up with an idea to use the blood to drip on the floor and smudge along the banister with Louise's (the stalkers) hand and used both of the ideas as they both flowed nicely together as she follows the Girl (Stephanie) up the stairs. There was a few problems whilst doing this because we had to do the scene quickly so it prevented the blood from staining the floor and stairs, although we couldn't stop the blood from staining Louise's hand.

The second was a re-shoot of the beginning where Louise (the stalker) walks down the hall way and the lights flicker and some of the doors slam along the way, we had to re-shoot this as in the first day of filming we was more concentrated on what we had to film and what was going on in the scene than the Techniques. This mistake was good because it let us realise what we done wrong so we didn't do it again but also wasn't good because it put us behind as we had to spend the time another day re-shooting the parts instead of spending our time on the things we should of been doing. The shots shots where all at the same camera angle and wasn't effective and stopped the tension when put together so we re-shot these at many different angles that are regularly used in the thriller films that influenced us, this also helped make the scene fast pace which suits the codes and conventions of a thriller film.. We also had to change the lights flickering through the hall as the flickering was making the quality of the film poor and had to see what was going on. Also the slamming of the doors as the stalker walked down the hall was a good idea, we could of used it if we could of had a longer opening scene, but we didn't so it would of taken up to much of the time and got boring, making it less effective.

The third change was the idea that would of been really good if we could of made it work, this was books falling off a book shelf which would of been really effective if we managed to do this. We tried to think of different ways we could of got the books to fly off the bookshelf in the room we was shooting in but it wasn't wasting time thinking of how to do that small scene that we wasn't getting on with another parts of the opening so we ended up not being at the stage we should of been at with filming. We had to scrap the bookshelf idea which was influenced by the Paranormal Activity film. In the end we ended up using just as an effective scene of the stalker looking through an air vent in the top of a door in a cupboard, which kept the effect we wanted to have in that certain scene. This change was also more life like in the end, the scene can be more personal to the audience and viewer as this can happen to anyone at anytime. This also suits the codes and conventions of a thriller and makes the viewer then feel paranoid, making them think of all the situations this could of happened to them.

The fourth big change whilst filming was the slamming of the door this was definitely going to be used somewhere in the film because when we all thought of thriller films we have watched and in real life situations that are scary. One thing we thought of was slamming doors as this scares you when you know someone is going to do it as also scares you even more when it is unexpected. In the room we was filming in the door to enter into the room was the door we wanted to slam but the door wasn't heavy enough to slam on its own by someone pushing it hard.We thought of different ideas and one of the main ones was using some fishing wire as its clear to attach to the handle of the door and someone from the outside of it pull the wire hard to make the door slam, which took many re-shoots and wasted a lot of time. This idea wasn't working and we couldn't get the door to slam so we ended up having to use a different door. This ended up more effective as we thought it would be as we could use the new door (which was a door to a cupboard) but we could also use the cupboard as the room the girl gets killed in and dragged out of in the end of the opening. Also turning the lights off at the same time as the door slamming made it more effective and just like a scene which was influenced by Paranormal Activity.

The fifth change we made was in the room we was filming in, we was capturing the victim on the computer after school doing work. This idea was used as after school school can be a scary place on your own as no one is about apart from a few cleaners and walking round school with no one to be seen is very strange to a student and also fits the codes and conventions of a thriller film as most thrillers are in deserted places with few people. Our plan was for the school girl to be on the computer doing work on her own and she keeps hearing noises and she gets scared looks at the door (where the noise has been coming from). As she turns around we wanted a POV (point of view) shot of her looking at the door and in the corner of her eye she sees the stalker standing inside an office in the room with her back facing her and as she turns back shes gone. We re-shot this scene many times to try and get the effect but it just looked stupid and didn't create any tension so we decided not to use that idea and we ended up having a POV shot of the girl walking to the bookshelf and looking for a book whilst the stalker looks through the vent in the cupboard.

The last re-shoot we had to make was the final from where the girl gets dragged from the cupboard and out the door. We decided to re-shoot this final shot as on the first day of filming we was all confused and thinking about other scenes we need to do in the next day of filming, we was rushing things including this shot and didn't look at the final outcome. We didn't realise where Stephanie (actor of the girl) was being dragged was from a set of draws outside the room which made it unrealistic where i was being dragged from because in the shot you could see the draws. We decided to re-shoot the shot and on the second day of shooting we had re-shot other parts that went wrong we then knew where the girl was getting killed so we changed the direction and the place the girl was going to be dragged was from (the cupboard) as we decided the girl was getting killed in the cupboard.
